Entrepreneur Magazine Names Savvy Cooperative Founder, Jen Horonjeff,
One of the Most Daring Entrepreneurs of 2018
NEW YORK - (November 1, 2018) - Jen Horonjeff, PhD, founder of Savvy Cooperative, has been named one of the most daring entrepreneurs of 2018 by Entrepreneur magazine. She appears on the list alongside other notable CEOs, founders and creators - from Elon Musk and Arlan Hamilton to Chance the Rapper and Reese Witherspoon.
Horonjeff was recognized for founding Savvy Cooperative, the first patient-owned platform that empowers patients to use their health experiences to advance research, resources and product development. The recognition is part of Entrepreneur’s annual issue profiling entrepreneurs who have taken bold action, dared to go big in the past year and who have also inspired others to dare even bigger.
Horonjeff’s bold move: looking beyond loyal customers, and letting them become shareholders of their co-op.
“Our current healthcare system is not patient-centered and, at times, is even extractive of patients. Savvy’s model of patient-ownership is considered innovative, but to us as longtime patients, it just made sense. People will be more engaged if they have a say in designing the systems and products they use, and share in their rewards. At Savvy, this isn’t a customer loyalty program, it’s ownership. We are taking a 200-year old business model, the co-op, and applying it to the modern day digital economy. We are proud to be the first patient-owned co-op and public benefit corporation.” Horonjeff added, “Our bottom line is our members. And when you put your users first, the business follows.”
Horonjeff’s passion to improve the patient experience was born from being diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis as an infant, and surviving a brain tumor as an adult. She has since become recognized as a leader in patient engagement and works with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other international organizations, including Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT), International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) and International Society for Quality of Life (ISOQOL).
Prior to launching Savvy Cooperative, she studied Dance and Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Irvine and received a Masters in Ergonomics and Biomechanics and a PhD in Environmental Medicine, both from NYU. She was a patient-centered outcomes researcher at Columbia University Medical Center, and a human factors engineer working to create more human-centered products and environments with designers and industry giants, such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter.
“My passion has always been about creating a world that prioritizes the needs of diverse individuals. I didn’t set out to start a company, but then I realized no one else was using a business model that truly put patients first. So we started a co-op, and have never looked back,” said Horonjeff.
